I wish someone had turbocharged ME today. I feel like I’ve achieved very little. Maybe if I get an early night and a good night’s sleep I will wake up turbocharged tomorrow. Thank you Brooklet for bringing this phrase in to my life today.

Allow me to introduce you to my Great Great Grandmother Chainey. The child on her lap is, possibly, my Great Grandmother but the jury’s out on that one. I don’t know the exact date of the picture but it’s from some time around the turn of the 20th Century. Wow. It blows my mind that if it weren’t for this lady (and many others) I wouldn’t be sitting here writing this. I cannot express how much I’d like to climb in to the picture and just talk to her. “Hi, I’m your Great Great Granddaughter form 2008. Wassup?” Ok, maybe I wouldn’t be that informal. I wonder what she’d think of me in my slouch jeans, tight t-shirts, plastic earrings and salon highlights. I mean, look at that dress. Look at the high, lacy Victorian neckline and the big puff sleeves. There is probably a corset underneath there too. I would probably look like a creature from another planet to her.

This was a time when women still didn’t really matter in society. They couldn’t vote, they only worked if poverty made it necessary and their opinions weren’t generally taken seriously. I want to tell her that I work out of choice, earn my own money, wear whatever I like…etc. I want to blow her mind with the future in the way she is doing for me with the past. I want to ask her what she did during the day and how she lived her life. I think I’m going to do some research on how her day might have played out. I will post my findings on here.

Word on the street is that the business is run by cupcake extraordinaires, Rebekka and Michelle (as in Michelle Branch!!!).

This song is kick-ass…. as is Natalie Maynes. The track came on the ipod while travelling to work today and it brought back a very vivid memory of seeing Dixie Chicks live in Nashville (pre- Iraq). If ‘August in Cardiff’ was a human being, I would give it some anti-depressants and refer it to a counsellor. It’s clearly having an identity crisis. Come on August, stop acting like November. I shouldn’t have to turn the office heater on to stave off hypothermia. I shouldn’t be looking out the window seeing freezing rain, gale force winds and dark grey skies. I shouldn’t be drinking a Lemsip because I’m getting a snuffly cold and a sore throat. What happened to you, August? You’ve chaaanged.

Is it just me, or does Dave look old enough to be Ef’s Dad in this picture? Let’s do the mathematics. David is what? 32? 33? Ef is not quite 21 yet. I suppose it’s biologically feasible but highly unlikely. Maybe it’s because Dave has got some nice little ‘wisdom lines’ around his eyes. Or maybe it’s that Ef is still trying to turn his downy stubble in to a real man beard. Either way, they look miles apart. I like the pic, but for god’s sake Ef, ditch the shiny suits. Please.

A LITTLE BIT OF SHAMELESS SELF PROMOTION

Something I started planning a while ago has come to fruition this weekend. I’m nuts about social history and wanted to start blogging about it. I had originally thought of just making it about fashion history (something that makes my heart skip a beat), but my ultimate passion is the history of people. How they lived, what made them happy, which events in history impacted upon their everyday lives fascinates me. I have no concrete plans as yet. I’ll see how it goes. No subject is out of bounds - sports, fashion, food, interiors, love, sex, music, film, tv, whatever. If it happened in the past, it’s fair game. I also have a big thing for immigrant history, so there’ll probably be a fair bit of that showing up.

So, if you’re interested in the history of people in any way, come on over. I promise I’ll try to make it interesting and fun. And I’ll give you a cup of tea and a scone if you’re really lucky.

Noooo it never went away. The photo I posted a few days ago was an old one. the beard is here to stay and i couldnt be happier.

Phew! I thought I was going a bit mad. THAT’S what confused me. The non-chronological DW posting. All MUCH appreciated though.
